What this is called depends on where you live.
Ingredients:
Ground beef Marinara Sauce, Italian flavored (room temperature) Mozzarela Cheese (slices or shredded) Onions Hoagie Buns (soft or crunchy)
For the beef, I do not use really lean meat, something in the middle. You can make these mixing half ground turkey and half ground beef, but plain turkey would be blah.
Peel and slice your onion in rings, not thick and not thin. Put the onion rings in a frying pan and cook till transparent. Remove the rings to a plate or bowl. With the spatula you will use for the patties, Roughly chop the onions into small pieces.
Meanwhile, make your patties in rectangles rather than round, to fit the bun. You can put a little bit of Italian seasoning either IN the meat, or on the patties when they are made. Salt and pepper the patties also, and don't forget a little garlic powder.
Cook the patties in the same pan you did the onions in and cook them well, you want the meat to have the texture of a hamburger steak, a little chewy.
When the patties are done, remove them from in the pan, and now you are ready to build your sandwich.
Pour the excess grease out of the pan and place your sliced hoagie buns face down in the pan to toast them. Now, put the buns on a cooking tray/sheet, face up, put a pattie on each one and top with chopped cooked onions, spoon on some sauce and top with the cheese.
Close the buns and place in a preheated oven (350 or so) for just long enough to melt the cheese. Slice in half and serve.
Some people like sliced black or green olives on their sandwiches. Actually, you can add or delete anything you want. Some people make this with shredded cooked beef, but I don't think it has the same mouth pleasing texture as a beef pattie.
Enjoy
