Spent Many a happy weekend fishing of the rocks in Anglesea (WALES).
Up to 20 of us would go and fish over the weekend.
We were always drunk and the wind was blowing a gale.
The tides were around 24ft and we were on top of the cliffs .
We only really went for the booze up but would catch lots of fish.
A 32 pound Conga eel on one occasion .
All my mates would fish using a ledger setup but my preference was to use a large pike bung as a float.
I reckon that from the top of the rocks I could get that float over 100 meters out.
I would have 6 hooks on the line and pull in the Mackerel six at a time .
Happy days long gone.

Sure did lots of  in my time (fresh water) and every darn year I keep saying "get the poles and bait ready rON* and for some odd reason every year it turns out that I don't go. Bob ( flashgordon ) is the BIG time fishermen around his neck of the woods way up north (12 hours or more drive) from us folks down yonder.. |

I had a boating holiday many many years ago on the Norfolk Broads (a lot of connected rivers where people hire yachts and cabin cruisers down the south of the UK)
I was skint in those days,(still am) no fishing tackle and the cheapest boat you could hire)
As we approached a mooring spot and were losing daylight, we made our way up a tiny canal that had boats moored up all over the place.
We moored up opposite the biggest and poshest boat I had come across.
The chaps who were fishing from the posh boat were drinking champagne and smoking big cigars.
The first thing one of them said to me was " I had a pike on the hook when you decided to moor up there"
He spoke to me like I was something he had just stepped in.
I had wanted to go to the pub but decided to have a couple of cans and hang around.
I watched them (the snotty nose mob) for a couple of hours with their fancy fishing tackle and they didn't catch a thing.
I had taken a reel of line and a couple of hooks and weights with me .
I didn't have a float so I used a small piece of polystyrene packaging from our tomatoes instead.
I was hand lining and pulling out fish one after the other as the posh chaps looked on in envy.
So it's not about what you have , it's about what you can do with what you have.

Well said 3rd!  and couldn’t agree more. As rON said,I love fishing.....next to hunting but fishing is my passion. I don’t have a big tackle box or expensive reels or poles, those don’t catch fish. My rule is “simpler is better”. My reel grinds and makes noise when I crank it in but it works great, so why replace it? A plain hook, a little weight and a leech, worm or minnow get me results. Walleye, (my favorite) Perch and Bluegill is what I go after, delicious! |

When I was about six years old my dad took us fishing to the local canal.
There were many discarded hooks and bits of line along the toe path of the canal.
I put together a line a hook and put a worm on and put it into the water and tied off the end onto the long grass of the toe path.
I went off to play as a six year old does.
I returned an hour later and had my first ever fish, a small Perch.
I often wonder if my dad had put that fish on my hook while I was exploring elsewhere
From then on I was hooked on fishing
